I met an ex-colleague a few weeks ago who was a huge asset to my team. A good team player and productive employee, someone i would not hesitate to hire if i was back in a management role. While working together it was clear that the buzz he, and other team members got, was through working with new and innovative technology and being creative with the results.
Well, while having a coffee, i discovered that this intelligent father of two who loves to get his hands dirty on the bits and bytes of technological development is also a painter and composer. He apparently put his house on the market and while prospective buyers were viewing it, they noticed his paintings and asked to purchase those instead. How did I not know this while we were working together?
Keep learning about your colleagues and team members, you may well be surprised and the whole environment will start to take on a new form.
